Colorado: someone yelled “Burn the forest down”

According to the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office, a wildfire that was started near the Manitou Incline on Thursday around 6 PM is being investigated as arson after reports have emerged of someone yelling “burn the forest down” in the moments before the fire sparked.A Friday morning update released by the City of Manitou Springs at approximately 7 AM stated that the fire has impacted an area of three to five acres with no containment. Firefighters worked on stopping the blaze overnight.

The blaze is located approximately half a mile up from the Barr Trailhead. Reports have stated that both the Manitou Incline and the Barr Trail are closed while the effort to stop the blaze continues.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office was initially looking for a white male in his early 40s. The investigation has since been turned over to the Manitou Springs Fire Department after a review of jurisdictional maps.No mandatory evacuation orders have been issued, though an optional evacuation order is in place for Fairview Avenue and the 500-600 block of Ruxton Avenue.
